Cabinet Construction Types

When starting a home renovation project, there are lots of decisions to make! Everything from where your new range will go to the color of your back splash tile. When it comes to the overall aesthetic of the space, one important decision to consider is how your cabinets will be constructed. There are three typical methods of cabinet construction: frameless, inset, and partial overlay. Each of these cabinet construction types can have beautiful results. Here are a few things to consider when choosing a cabinet construction type:

Frameless

This style of cabinet construction tends to be used in contemporary settings. With less lines, the overall look is more minimalist than the other construction types. End panels and vertical members called "styles" are typically only 3/4 in. wide, making for clean, crisp edges.

Inset

This style of cabinet construction provides a frame in which every drawer front and door is fitted flush with the front of the cabinet, resulting in a clean, traditional look. Every drawer front and door is carefully adjusted to have a 3/32" gap between it and the styles and rails (the vertical and horizontal elements of the frame).

Partial Overlay

In this method of cabinet construction, drawer fronts and drawers overlap the face frame of the cabinet. While typically seen in older homes and modular cabinetry, it can still have an appropriate time and place for use. Because of the overlap, doors can easily be replaced with much less labor and precision, making this method of cabinet construction generally more affordable.
